Itinerary

DAY 1Arrival in Cusco and Tour of the Imperial City

Upon your arrival at the Cusco airport in the morning, our Pma Tripsteam will pick you up and go to the hotel you have reserved, and with your guide they will coordinate all the details about your tour. You have a couple of hours to rest and get used to the altitude.)
In the afternoon, start a walking tour with your tour guide, visiting the most notable places in Cusco:

the cathedral of Cusco
One of the most emblematic places in Cusco is the cathedral that is located in the main square and has incredible artistic value. It is a colonial monument and was built on the Inca Palace of Wiracocha. Inside the cathedral, you will find many detailed and refined wood carvings, such as the choir, pulpit, and altars. There are also many beautiful paintings from the Cusco School of Art and impressive embossed silver pieces.

Qoricancha Temple and Santo Domingo Temple
This religious center was of great importance to the Incas and was built to worship the sun, which was the supreme deity of the ancient civilization. Inside the temple, you will see smaller temples dedicated to various celestial bodies, including the sun, moon, and stars. What really catches the eye is the combination of outstanding Inca architecture and Spanish colonial architecture. More pieces from the Cuzqueña School of Art are also on display.
After having visited these places, we will take our private transport to go to the following archaeological sites such as:

Sacsayhuaman
About 2 km from the city center is this fortress that was built with huge carved rocks that come together harmoniously. You will notice that there are three overlapping platforms that have an average length of 360 meters. Some stones tower over you 9 meters high! Take some time to walk around and appreciate the fantastic architecture
Qenqo
This place was an Inca ceremonial center. The most prominent feature of this complex is an open space known as an amphitheater. Hundreds of years ago, Inca mummies would have been found in the various niches around the site. The amphitheater is only half its original height today.

Puka Pukara
The name of this site means “red fortress”, mainly due to the reddish tint, which is the result of a large amount of iron in the rocks. Many believe that the fortress was perhaps an old storage area (Tambo) that served as both a resting place and a lookout to protect Tambomachay. In this complex you can see impressive architecture, fountains, aqueducts and various Inca enclosures.

Tambomachay
The last stop on this tour is a fascinating complex where you can see finely carved stones, waterfalls and aqueducts to transport water from nearby springs and hot springs. For this reason, Tambomachay is associated with the cult of water. In front of this construction, there is a tower that is believed to be associated with a lookout post and a communication tower.
In the afternoon, at the end of our tour of these impressive sites, we headed back to your hotel.

Considerations:

  • MEALS:  breakfast, lunch, dinner and hot drinks.
  • WALKING DISTANCE:   6.21 miles / 10 km

DAY 2 Exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas

This day, we will pick you up from your hotel. We will then drive to the sacred valley of the Incas on a road that winds around the mountains north of Cusco. Along the way, we will stop at a famous point known as El Mirador de Taray. From there, we will be able to see the Sacred Valley and get an insight into Inca history. The Sacred Valley was one of the main settlement areas of the Incas. There is an unusual abundance of fertile plains in this high part of the Andes. You will also witness vast contour terraces and irrigation canals left by the Incas. Later, we will head towards the ruins of Pisac. Here, you will witness and learn about the Inca culture. You will see amazing stone works of art and impressive agricultural terraces.
After exploring, we’ll head back to the lower town of Pisac to stop at a bustling craft market. After spending some time walking through the market, we continue with the tour, in the city of Urubamba we will have lunch at a local Andean restaurant.
After lunch, we will drive along the Urubamba River to the town of Ollantaytambo. Once we arrive in Ollantaytambo, we will visit the ruins, an important Inca construction area, built during the heyday of the Incas. This is an extraordinary Inca site because you can find rock formations that represent the Inca god, Wiracocha.
At the end of the impressive journey full of great experiences in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we will go back to your hotel and you can rest for the next day’s walk.

DAY 3Hike to the Heart of the Mountains Salkantay and Humantay

We start the day by picking you up from your hotel at approx. 4:40 a.m. m. We will drive around 4 hours in our private transportation, crossing Anta Limatambo (2100 m / 6888 ft), an important access point to the city of Cusco during the time of the Inca Empire, Mollepata and ending in Challancha. Through the bus windows you can clearly see the white peaks of the Apus Salkantay (6,271 m / 20,569 ft) and Humantay (5,902 m / 19,359 ft): two colossal gods of the Incas. You’ll also see a spectacular landscape of high peaks and low valleys in a colorful and contrasting panorama that fills every direction you look!

After the first two hours of driving, we’ll make a quick stop at Mollepata (2,800 m / 9,184 ft), to take advantage of the restroom facilities, souvenir shops, and an optional short breakfast. We will then continue to Challacancha, the starting point of our trek. We will meet with our support staff, and they will organize all the equipment and pack mules. Around 09:30 am, where we meet our riders and horses. From this point we begin the ascent on foot to Soraypampa (3,850 / 12,631 ft), the first camp on our trip.

The first section of the path takes us through some deep valleys along the side of a mountain. In some parts of the road you can still see an old aqueduct that still supplies water to farmers in the lower valleys. We will travel 7 km (4.35 miles) in 3 hours to Soraypampa where we will have our lunch at the Salkantay base camp.

After lunch and a short rest, we will ascend to the unforgettable Laguna Humantay (4,200 m / 13,779 ft). This is a 5 km round trip that we will walk in a total of 3 hours. This place is one of the most beautiful views in all the Andes with incredible blue-green waters that reflect the mountain glaciers of Apu Humantay. It looks like something out of a dream or a fairy tale! Back at our camp, the valley floor at sunset creates the most peaceful scene with an energy that can only be felt and not described. Because Soraypampa (our camp) is located in the middle of the glacial valleys, the sky is so blazingly clear at night that you can really appreciate the stars, constellations and even comets shooting through the pitch blackness, without be interrupted by the hustle, bustle, or city lights. Take a moment tonight to refocus your spirit and consider all the deep things of life in the profound silence and tranquility of Soraypampa. And enjoy a delicious tea time and dinner prepared by our chefs before going to rest.

DAY 4Salkantay Trek Through the Mountains into the Jungle

Today is the most challenging day, but you will be rewarded with some of the most impressive scenery. This day, we get up very early around 5:30 am to enjoy an energizing breakfast that will give you the boost you need to get going.
We leave early after breakfast and begin an ascent of 1 hour and a half, which takes us to the Salkantay Mountain Pass (4525 m / 14842 ft) where, in addition to enjoying impressive views of the emerging glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera de Vilcabamba With the south face of Salkantay towering over us, we will also be able to observe chinchillas and condors in their natural habitat. Salkantay Mountain is the second-highest mountain in the Cusco region and one of the Inca gods called “Apu”.

From this point, we begin to descend towards a more tropical climate and towards the so-called cloud forest. An approximate distance of 5 kilometers to reach Huayracmachay, where we will have lunch what our chef has prepared.
In the afternoon, after our meal, we will enter the upper part of the Amazon jungle. This is a 10 km hike completed in 3 hours on a wide trail in the weight and magical tropical forest. During this part of the trek you will notice a dramatic change in the landscape and energy of the earth as we move from the Andes to the Amazon! This hike is really beautiful; the hills are decorated with colorful landscaping, wildlife, and native plants. The forests are warm and tropical most of the year with temperate climates. At the end of this exceptional hike, we arrive at Chawllay Village (2,900 m / 9,514 ft) for a well-deserved reward of rest from our long day of hiking.

DAY 5Wonderful Jungle Trip and Natural Coffee Tasting

We will wake up early and have breakfast around 6:00 am. This day we have an easier walk ahead, here the temperature will be much warmer, where we will walk through some of the most incredible landscapes in Peru.

We start our walk towards the small town called La Playa, along the valley of Santa Teresa. During the walk we will see rivers, waterfalls, streams that provide many opportunities to take a refreshing dip in their crystal clear waters, we will also observe wild orchids and coffee, banana and avocado plantations. You can taste the famous passion fruit along the way! If we are lucky, we might even see a cock of the rock, the national bird of Peru. Once we arrive at La Playa we will enjoy the delicious lunch that our chef prepared for us.

After a well-deserved lunch and rest, we continue walking towards our camp which will be in Lucmabamba (2100 m / 6888 ft). Along the way we will be able to observe banana, coffee and avocado plantations, as well as an exuberant local flora. We enter spectacled bear territory and will probably be accompanied by flocks of parrots as we descend.
Once in Lucmabamba, we will have time to explore the jungle and visit an organic coffee farm. The aroma that fills the air is heavenly. You will be able to taste and appreciate the process that is carried out to obtain a good coffee, freshly prepared by the locals. In this region, coffee is the main agricultural industry and locals grow acres of plants for export to Europe, the United States and Asia. Then we will have tea time before our dinner.

DAY 6Explore the Inca Sites and see Machu Picchu for the first time

We are getting closer to the Inca citadel, and today you will be eager to get going once you have enjoyed a hot coca tea in your tent and filled up with a delicious breakfast. We will leave early and walk along a part of the original Inca trail that is well known throughout the world.
It will be a constant climb of three hours, surrounded by impressive views of the Santa Teresa valley, we will arrive at the archaeological site of Llactapata (2700 m / 8858 ft). From here we get our first glimpse of our final destination: Machu Picchu and also a part of the classic Inca trail in the distance, a truly inspiring sight!
Llactapata is truly a wonderful place to enjoy as a group and learn all about the history and roots of the land from your expert guide. About the history of the Incas who worshiped the earth. In addition to the citadel of Machu Picchu, you will see Huayna Picchu and the Machu Picchu mountain. You’ll have plenty of time to take photos here and share them with friends and family when you return home.

After a break, we will continue on a downhill trail for about two hours, passing plantations of coffee, cocoa, bananas, and other native crops being grown. Eventually, we will arrive at the Hydroelectric Station, a well-known point on several routes to Machu Picchu, where we will have lunch. We will then walk a couple more hours until we reach Aguas Calientes, the lively town below Machu Picchu.

After checking into your hotel, you’ll have some free time to explore the city and, if you wish, visit the nearby hot springs. We will have dinner at one of the many excellent local restaurants in Aguas Calientes, and then you can return to your hotel for an early night before our last day and our tour of the magnificent Machu Picchu.

DAY 7Explore the Wonderful Inca Site Machu Picchu

To better appreciate Machu Picchu, we will get up early in the morning to be able to arrive at the citadel on time. You will first have time to have breakfast and then your guide will pick you up from the hotel around 5:30 am. Then we will walk to the starting point of the bus for the short and zigzag ascent for approximately 30 minutes on the way to Machu Picchu.

We will then pass through the gates to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. Here you will start your guided walking tour with an experienced and very knowledgeable guide. Our tour of Machu Picchu will last approximately two hours and will take you to all the most famous and spectacular parts of the extensive archaeological complex of Machu Picchu. These include the House of the Guardian, the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, and other key locations. And while we walk, we will have spectacular views of the agricultural terraces of Machu Picchu and the fluorescent mountains and deep gorges. After the guided tour, you will have time to explore Machu Picchu at your leisure, perhaps walking to some lesser visited parts such as the Inca Bridge.

Once we have finished our tour of Machu Picchu, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you can relax and have lunch in one of the many restaurants in this town, before arriving at the station to board the train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy. Our Machupicchu Tierra FelizCompany transports will pick you up from your hotel, as long as you are in the Historic Center of Cusco. Pick-up time will be coordinated with your guide at the briefing. The pick-up time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic.
Cusco is a very old city, therefore it has many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnb may be located on streets with no car access or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to carry luggage. We strongly recommend that you book an accommodation with good access.

> How is the trip?

Average daytime temperatures in and around Cusco generally range between 55º and 75º F and cool to 40º and 50º at night. Much of this itinerary takes place in the mountains, where the climate can change very quickly and night temperatures regularly drop to 30º and 40º. During the “dry season”, the days are usually clear and pleasant, with clouds in the afternoon that occasionally accumulate and cause small amounts of rain, and the morning temperatures usually oscillate between 35º and 45º with some frost on the tents. Plains in some places. While April and November departures may experience slightly higher amounts of rain, rain throughout the day is unusual. We will hike up several mountain passes that are over 15,000 ft / 4600 m,
therefore you have to bring the necessary things for the Ausangate trek 2 days.

> Group tours

Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also agree that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, everyone can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wants to modify the route; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if such modifications can be made.

> How many days do I need to acclimatize in Cusco before the trip?

It is very important to be well acclimatized to the altitude before exerting yourself on a hike. We recommend that you arrive in Cusco at least 2 or 3 days before the trek begins to help you acclimatize and avoid possible problems with altitude sickness during the trek.

Suppose you have already been to another area of Peru at a high altitude before arriving in Cusco. In that case, we still recommend that you have a full day in Cusco to rest, recover from your trip and fully enjoy your trek and have a unique experience.

> Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the trip, your main luggage can be stored in our office (you can coordinate during the day of the briefing or by email) or at your hotel, both for free.
Any equipment you don’t need on the trek can be safely stored at your hotel. Almost all hotels will offer this service. Do not leave valuables with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and get an itemized receipt (in the unlikely event of theft, many insurance companies require you to have a copy of the receipt with all items). It’s best to put items like credit cards in a sealed and signed envelope for added peace of mind.

> Strikes and demonstrations

Strikes and demonstrations are often frequent in Peru, and this can interrupt some of our planned tours. They can block the roads and take control of the railroad tracks. However, we will try to keep your tour as planned, even if it means leaving the night before your scheduled date. In these circumstances, tours can also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our top priority and decisions will be made appropriately.
